Full title: Joan of Arc Mistaking the Goddess Athena For St. Margaret
Medium: Ink and colored pencil on paper
This is sort of a polytheistic twist on the story of Joan of Arc. Here, I imagine that Joan did not hear the voices of saints but of ancient gods. In this picture, I chose the Greek goddess Athena, as her domain is combat and strategy (unlike Ares, who just represents mindless bloodshed). Only as a medieval French Christian, Joan thinks Athena is St. Margaret. Actually, the concept of Christian saints is a bit similar to a pagan pantheon!

It’s funny how if you take Jesus out of the equation, Christianity is basically all monotheistic takes on pagan practices/beliefs.
