Now for the latest development on the SamTrans assignment: it's over for me.  So yesterday, at the end of my shift, I was told to call my supervisor to get my schedule for tomorrow.  I was hoping I'd get my schedule for the whole week.  So when I called, she told me she'd call me this morning with my schedule.  So I waited this morning, but no call.  After lunch, I decided to call her.  And then she told me they'd decided that this job wasn't right for me. :( I didn't ask for any reasons why they decided this, I just accepted it.  Of course, I have some ideas why I was thrown off the assignment.  Like not calling soon enough after getting that text about the assignment, I'm sure that didn't look good.  Plus I had some concerns about conflicts in my shcedule.  I won't go into detail here.  Anyway, the job itself wasn't so bad.  But getting my schedule wasn't easy.  There was obviously a lot of work in putting the schedule together.  Anyway, I'm hoping I get another assignment soon.

OK, gang.  I thought I'd tell you about the temp assignment I've been working on.  Here's what it's about: I ride on a SamTrans bus throughout its route, offering surveys to the passengers.  This is to help improve the quality of service.  Anyway, on Friday I got a runthrough of how it's done.  I was with some other surveyors as they worked the same assignment.  We had scanning machines to keep track of the passengers and their surveys, where they got on and off the bus.  Some passengers declined the survey.  We acknowledged them by scanning a barcode on our clipboard.  The ones who did take the survey, we recorded by scanning barcodes on the surveys they took.  Not an exciting assignment, but I've had worse.  Anyway, I'll be back out there tomorrow, possibly Monday.  I don't know how long it'll last, though.

Well, I have an update on the situation with the SamTrans assignment.  Last night, I noticed a text message on my cell phone.  They finally got back to me concerning that bus questionnaire assignment.  I looked to see when the message got sent, and it looks like it was sent on Monday night.  I was shocked.  How could I have not known about it for almost 48 hours?!  To be fair, I wasn't exactly expecting a text message concerning any temp assignment.  That's not how I'm usually contacted about my assignments.  I wondered if there'd still be an assignment if I still called.  So this morning, I called the number.  I had to leave a voicemail.  Then I was immediately called back.  I told the guy who I was supposed to talk to, and he said he'd have to call me back in about five to ten mintes.  It was considerably longer than that before my call was returned.  So the lady I spoke to told me to meet her at a specific street corner in San Francisco.  Hope this works out!

Thought I'd give you guys a follow-up on the situation with the SamTrans assignment.  Anyway, I got up early yesterday morning.  Before I went out, I called my recruiter at the temp agency.  I hoped to get the address to report to.  She couldn't give me a proper address, but just said to go where the SamTrans stop was at Daly City.  So I took the train down.  When I got to Daly City, I called the agency, to find out what to do next.  That's when I found that the person in charge didn't even have a schedule for me.  So I decided to just go home instead of hanging around there, waiting for my next instructions.  Good thing I did too, or I would have been there all day!  Anyway, when 1 PM rolled around, I figured I wouldn't be called in that day.  No way could I put in eight hours at that point!  Anyway, this morning, I called the agency to see what was what.  My recruiter said she'd call them and find out.  And I did not hear back from them for the rest of the day.  I hate being on pins and needles like this!

Well, gang, things have been starting to pick up in terms of employment.  I had a feeling I'd be getting more temp assignments in the days to come.  So one of my agencies called me to offer a new assignment.  This involves handing questionnaires on buses going between Daly City and San Mateo.  It'll run for about a week, and pays $13 per hour.  I'd be required to put in eight hours a day.  The earliest shifts start at 4 AM, but I'm not required to show up that early.  As long as I can put in eight hours before 9 PM, it's all good!  So I asked the recruiter if the place to report to was easily accessible to BART.  When it was clear it was, I agreed to the assignment.  Then I was told I'd need to send a photo of me, because in order to ride the buses without having to pay, I'd need a badge.  My recruiter suggested i take a photo and text it, but I don't have a camera phone.  So I was told to just send any photo of me.  I didn't think I'd be able to find a recent picture.  But then I remembered my iMac had Photo Studio, which takes photos using my webcam.  So I was able to photograph myself, easy as that!  I E-mailed it to someone at the agency.  But then I was told I'd need a photo of me against a plain white wall.  That wouldn't be so easy.  I decided to hang a bedsheet from my ceiling behind my computer chair.  That wasn't easy, but I got it done, and got the shot.  And the lady at the agency said she could work with it.  I haven't heard back from them with the address to report to.  I just know it's at the Daly City BART station.  Maybe I'll get a call early tomorrow morning.

Hey gang!  Figured I should tell you how last night's temp assignment went.  Fortunately, it was considerably better than my last one.  It was at a shop called Lamps Plus.  I knew where it was, and that's good.  So the thing was, they were checking over their inventory, and they needed temps to help out.  Luckily, this wasn't so physically demanding.  The assignment had us looking over the shop's merchandise, and listing the items by serial number (SKU) and quantity.  I was working with their Stock Supervisor.  First, we were in the warehouse, cataloguing what was on the shelves.  After all the stock in the back had been checked, then it had to be double-checked.  So I helped double-check the lists checked by another team.  Once the stock in the back was done, we checked the merchandise in the showroom.  That was all right.  But then I wound up helping to catalogue the lampshades.  There was a helluva lot, with many different varieties!  Looking over them all took us about an hour and a half!  But there were some perks to this assignment.  We were provided with snacks, and they even ordered some pizzas for us!  Probably to compensate to people for having to work on a Sunday.  In the end, I stayed a bit longer than expected.  I was told the assignment would end at eight, but I was working until almost nine!  Well, I got a bit of overtime anway.

I had a sudden temp assignment come in this morning.  I'd had a feeling the assignments would come more frequently.  I remember the assignment I had way back in January of 2012.  Before that, it had been years since my last assignment.  My next assignment after that came in September, and I was working until November.  After that, I had to wait until February for my next assignment.  This told me that I'd be getting assignments more frequently.
Well, I'd been getting more frequent calls from one of my agencies, at the evry least.  Last week on Tuesday, a recruiter called me to offer an assignment on April 21st.  I thought it a bit odd that I'd be offered an assignment so far in the future.  The next day, the recruiter called me again to offer me a three-day assignment in South San Francisco.  I had to turn it down, as I couldn't easily access it by public transport.  Then on Thursday, I had gone out, but the recruiter left a message on my answering machine to offer me an assignment in the city.  As soon as I got the message at home, I called back, only to find that the position had been filled. (Apparently, this was the only guy at the agency who didn't have my cell phone number!)
Anyway, this morning, the agency called me to say there was an assignment in San Bruno.  I was told the location was close to a BART station, so I accepted.  I rushed to get ready, then I headed down.  I was told the business's address, but not directions on how to get there.  If I'd had time, I could have looked up the directions online.  I tried asking the Information official at the San Bruno BART station, but it took her a while and a phone call to get something to tell me.  I headed off, but soon it seemed to me I was going in the wrong direction.  So I called my agency for directions.  The recruiter couldn't tell me, but he suggested I call the business.  So I did, and got the right directions.  Fortunately, the lady at BART gave me a local map.  I eventually made it.  The business was called SmartSource Rentals, and they're a warehouse of computer hardware.  They had me do some cleaning up.  First they had me take some plastic boxes in their alley, and toss them in their dumpster.  That was a big job, and I couldn't toss all the boxes, as the dumpster was getting full. Then they had me sweep up in the warehouse.  Afterwards, I gathered debris from the alley to be hauled to the dump.  I'd actually finished the work in half a day, so I got to leave early.  So it wasn't an ideal day, but at least it was short!  As for the assignment on the 21st, I'm still waiting on the details.

OK, the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library's Spring Book Sale is over now.  Thought you might like to read about my volunteering experience there.
So it opened on Monday.  This was a special preview day for members of the organization.  That day, they had me helping out to sign in volunteers  A bit later on, as the doors opened, they had a catered reception, and I helped out at that.  First, I was one of the volunteers who stood outside the kitchen, basically keeping other volunteers out of the way of the caterers.  Then, when the reception was opened, I stood behind one of the tables with the food, to keep the line moving.  There was a good turnout for the opening!  The organization had set up long rows of shopping carts near the entrance.  In a matter of minutes, all the carts were taken!  And at the reception, the food ran out rather quickly as well.  At least the caterers had more than enough wine, as they'd set out a hundred bottles!
The rest of my time volunteering at the sale, I was appointed to be a cashier.  The pricing system was simple: $3 for hardcover books, $2 for softcover, and $1 for all media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) and children's books.  Some days were busier than others.  On Wednesday, they didn't even need that many cashiers.  At one point, they had me help out clear off some tables full of classic literature, so they could have more space for new arrivals.  But it was a good experience.  There were lots of snacks for the volunteers.  Plus we each got a $5 credit on buying books.  So I managed to pick up some books for a low price!
Also, while I was doing that, Dad put in my crown.  Fortunately, I was only working in the afternoons, and the appointment was Wednesday morning.  It was a quick operation.  I didn't need a shot to numb my mouth.  Dad just took the temporary crown out, had to adjust the fit of the permanent crown, and cemented it in place.  Had no problems with it!
My last day volunteering at the Spring Book Sale was Saturday.  I had opted not to volunteer on Sunday.  From what I understand, things would be hectic, as everything just cost a dollar!  In the end, it was a nice experience for me.  I look forward to helping out with the organization more!

Hi gang!  Happy St. Stupid's Day (what some of us in San Francisco call April Fool's Day)!
Anyway, this week I'll be doing quite a lot of volunteer work.  After signing on with the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, I signed up to help at their annual Book Sale.  They hold a big used book sale every year at Ft. Mason Center.  When they sent me the E-mail asking for volunteers, I signed up.  I signed on for possible volunteer positions each day of the sale, from tomorrow to Saturday.  Wasn't sure if they'd need me every day.  But anyway, I'll be there each day.  Tomorrow, I think they'll have me at the Membership table.  Each day after that, I'll be on cashier duty.  Should be fun!  I'll let you all know what it's like!

Hey all.  Here's some follow-up to my journal about my dental work.  So after two weeks, I went back to Dr. Lee's office, so my dad could install the crown on my tooth.  Fortunately, I had no problems with the tooth that needed to be treated.  Anyway, Dad numbed the upper left quadrant of my mouth to do his work.  He put in a temporary crown for the time being, while a more permanent model would be crafted in a lab.  Dad noticed that Dr. Lee seemed to prefer temporary crowns made of metal.  A gold/aluminum alloy, to be exact.  It took a while to adjust the crown so it would properly fit, but it got done.  So in two weeks, the permanent crown will be ready to install.  In the meantime, Dad advised me to regularly rinse with salt water, as he'd noticed some inflammation of my gums.

Had to have some dental work done recently.  Here's how it started: one night (a week ago from Wednesday), one of my teeth broke.  I think it cracked while I was eating popcorn.  Anyway, some time after that, a piece of my tooth just came off!  So, the next morning, I called Dr. Lee, my former boss.  I hoped he could look at my broken tooth.  Fortunately, he was able to see me early, before his first patient came in.  So I hightailed it to his office.  Dr. Lee took a look in my mouth, surveyed the damage, then X-rayed the teeth.  He'd noticed a hole in the tooth next to the one that had cracked.  He found cavities in that tooth.  Some food must have gotten stuck between those two teeth, and damaged them.  He proposed a crown on the tooth that broke, and a filling in the other one.  Now, my dad is a retired dentist, and Dr. Lee had taken over his practice.  Dr. Lee suggested that Dad could do the work on me if he were available.  If he couldn't do it, Dr. Lee would, but he'd have to charge me for it.  Frankly, I didn't care who was doing the work. (I was sure that if Dr. Lee charged me, my folks would help me pay the bill.) Anyway, we called my dad about the situation, and he agreed to work on my teeth.  We set up the appointment for the following Wednesday.  The wait wasn't a problem, as my tooth wasn't in pain, and it wasn't cutting up the inside of my mouth.  On that Wednesday, I went back to Dr. Lee's office, where Dad came and worked on my mouth.
Had to take a shot of Novocaine to numb the upper left side of my mouth.  Anyway, the operation went smoothly.  Fortunately, I didn't need a root canal.  The filling was done, and the base for the crown was put in.  The crown will be installed a week from Wednesday.  The reason it wasn't put in right away is because Dad likes to wait before putting in a crown, just to see if there are any problems that need to be treated in the meantime.  Which makes sense, because whatever problems there might be shouldn't be sealed in.  Anyway, I'm glad I had this problem seen to, before things got too bad!  In the future, I should try to floss more often!

Been kind of busy lately.  Yesterday I got a temp assignment.  It was a sudden thing, kind of last minute.  The assignment was to be on a clean-up crew for a trade show at Moscone Center.  Anyway, I got myself ready.  Had to make a few stops before I headed to Moscone.  First had to get a $20 from the ATM, then load $10 onto my Clipper card so I had busfare to go down.  Anyway, the event at the Moscone was the San Francisco International Gift Fair.  The assignment was at first to pick up trash from the floor while exhibitors were setting up.  We were using these items that were like huge wheelbarrows.  I think they were called wetherwales.  Anyway, after a while, I was given a new task.  As they were laying down carpets in the aisles, I was one of five assigned to vacuum the carpets.  At first, I had trouble turning my vacuum on.  I thought it was broken.  But it was working.  The problem was, I'd plugged it into a surge suppressor that was plugged into another surge suppressor that was turned off!  Anyway, I set to work.  There weren't a lot of electric outlets, I had to find them where I could.  I'd started at 11:30 AM, so at 8 PM, I'd done eight hours.  The thing was, I didn't have a timecard. (Like I said, it was a last-minute thing.) I'd hoped the people in charge had some timecards for such situations.  However, they didn't.  There was one other temp who had a blank timecard, but I'd have to photocopy it.  So I went into the hall, hoping there's be a place in Moscone where I could make copies.  I found a lady in security, so I asked her.  She said the business office was closed, so I couldn't make copies there.  I hoped I could go to a nearby copy shop.  But the lady said that after 8 PM, we didn't have in-and-out privileges.  So I had no options.  I just took the timecard inside.  I explained the situation to the supervisor, and she wrote a note saying that I'd worked eight hours, when I'd worked, etc.  Anyway, I'll send the note to the agency, and hopefully there won't be too much trouble.  At least there was one nice perk.  There was a box of candy that some vendors had left behind, so we were allowed to help ourselves.  So, all in all, it wasn't too bad.

Hey gang!  On Saturday, I had my first volunteering experience with the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.  I'd previously gotten an E-mail inviting me to help out.  It was for cleaning up after a $1 book sale at their donation headquarters.  They said I could have up to five free books for helping out.  They suggested I come early before they closed the sale, so I could pick out the books I wanted.  So I did just that.  I signed in and took a look around, and managed to find five books I wanted. (In case you're wondering, I got: The Darwin Awards by Wendy Northcutt, What's the Number For 911? by Leland Gregory, Take My Wife... by Hugh Payne, The Mammoth Book of Jokes, edited by Geoff Tiballs, and The Odyssey by Homer.) So after all the customers were out, we volunteers set about putting all the unsold books into boxes.  There were a lot of books going into a lot of boxes, but there was a good number of volunteers on hand, so we got the job done pretty quickly.  So it was a good experience!

Hey, all.  Well, you may remember when my volunteering at the Marine Mammal Center Gift Shop at Pier 39 came to a close a few months ago.  I decided I'd start volunteering at the San Francisco Public Library.  I made it a New year's resolution that I'd start volunteering there in 2013.  So recently I contacted someone in the Library's volunteer program.  She sent an E-mail of the Library's volunteer opportunities.  They have specific programs for volunteering.  The one that caught my eye was for a related group the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.  This group has a shop within the library where they sell used books.  They also host events where they sell books, like in front of the library, and at Ft. Mason Center.  So I called the lady there.  She returned my call today, and we discussed what I could do.  She had me fill out an application on their website.  Anyway, I think it'll be fun volunteering for them!

Things have been kind of frustrating on the work front.  Some time after Xmas, I got an E-mail from one of my agencies (the one that's gotten me the recent temp assignments) about an assignment in San Francisco.  Of course, I responded to say I was interested in being considered for it!  The hours would be 3 to 11 again, but since it's within city limits, the commute will be more reasonable.  Anyway, Lisa, my recruiter, sent me back an E-mail on Thursday, saying to call her the following morning.  So I called then, but got her voicemail.  I left a message.  I then wondered if I'd been given the assignment, and if so, if I'd have to go in that afternoon.  Finally, I tried calling her again about 12:30.  I got Lisa in person, but she said she was in a conference call and would call me back in half an hour.  So I waited an hour, but no response.  I tried calling one more time, but got voicemail again.  I just decided to wait it out, hoping for a call back.  But there were no calls.  So I made a mental note to call again this morning.  I was hoping to get her on the phone and find out what's what on the assignment.  So this morning, I called again.  And once again, voicemail.  I do hope to speak to Lisa, and find out what's going on.  She owes me an apology!

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope you all had fun seeing 2012 out and 2013 in.  Last night, I was out with my pal Brian (:iconatomic-bear:).  He had some friends with him from the Cartoon Art Museum bookstore, Nick and Destiny (:iconinuyashassexywife:).  Destiny was this cute otaku girl with a punk raver look.  So first we had dinner at Tokyo Express on Market St.  I had beef teriyaki, served donburi style.  After we ate there, we went through Chinatown to North Beach.  We'd originally planned to go to this gelato shop called Naia, but when we finally got there, it was closing.  We were still allowed in, but many of the flavors were out.  I'd have been happy to stay, as I saw a few flavors I might have liked.  They had some interesting flavors, like gingerbread, bosc pear and "21st Amendment Beer."  But Brian decided we should move on, as all the flavors he liked were gone.  So we went across the street to an Italian pastry shop called Mara's.  I saw they had tiramisu on their dessert menu, so I had to have some of that!  Got it with some tea.  We hung out, did some sketching.  Later, we had to take Destiny to catch a bus back to Treasure Island.  And some time after that, Brian and Nick headed off, before midnight.  So I went to the Embarcadero to catch the fireworks at midnight.  Things were crowded there, but I had a good time.

Well, I'm back at my place after spending Christmas at the old house.  Nice to be back home again, but I've got a hell of a lot of art to color!
Now, some big news.  My pageview counter is closing in on 1,250,000.  So yes, it's Kiriban Klub time again!  Anyone who catches that number on their pageview gets a special request picture. (Please get a screencap if possible!) And of course, if no one hits the exact number, the prize goes to whoever comes closest (#1,249,999 or #1,250,001).  Good luck! ;)

Merry Christmas, dear watchers!  Hope you all had a nice Yuletide today.  Mine was pretty good.  It rained quite a bit today, though.  Anyway, we started the day with a special French toast breakfast.  I got to talk to my sister Suzy on the phone.  Then we opened presents.  I got a sweater, a pair of pajamas, a check and a calendar.  After that, I relaxed and worked on art.  In the afternoon, we had Christmas dinner: turkey breast, sweet potatoes and broccoli.  Not a big fancy dinner, just the three of us.  For dessert, we had ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.  After that, we watched the movie RED.  I like that movie, and Dad does too!  Anyway, things were all right today, had a good time.
