Hey gang!  On Saturday, I had my first volunteering experience with the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.  I'd previously gotten an E-mail inviting me to help out.  It was for cleaning up after a $1 book sale at their donation headquarters.  They said I could have up to five free books for helping out.  They suggested I come early before they closed the sale, so I could pick out the books I wanted.  So I did just that.  I signed in and took a look around, and managed to find five books I wanted. (In case you're wondering, I got: The Darwin Awards by Wendy Northcutt, What's the Number For 911? by Leland Gregory, Take My Wife... by Hugh Payne, The Mammoth Book of Jokes, edited by Geoff Tiballs, and The Odyssey by Homer.) So after all the customers were out, we volunteers set about putting all the unsold books into boxes.  There were a lot of books going into a lot of boxes, but there was a good number of volunteers on hand, so we got the job done pretty quickly.  So it was a good experience!

Hey, all.  Well, you may remember when my volunteering at the Marine Mammal Center Gift Shop at Pier 39 came to a close a few months ago.  I decided I'd start volunteering at the San Francisco Public Library.  I made it a New year's resolution that I'd start volunteering there in 2013.  So recently I contacted someone in the Library's volunteer program.  She sent an E-mail of the Library's volunteer opportunities.  They have specific programs for volunteering.  The one that caught my eye was for a related group the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.  This group has a shop within the library where they sell used books.  They also host events where they sell books, like in front of the library, and at Ft. Mason Center.  So I called the lady there.  She returned my call today, and we discussed what I could do.  She had me fill out an application on their website.  Anyway, I think it'll be fun volunteering for them!

Things have been kind of frustrating on the work front.  Some time after Xmas, I got an E-mail from one of my agencies (the one that's gotten me the recent temp assignments) about an assignment in San Francisco.  Of course, I responded to say I was interested in being considered for it!  The hours would be 3 to 11 again, but since it's within city limits, the commute will be more reasonable.  Anyway, Lisa, my recruiter, sent me back an E-mail on Thursday, saying to call her the following morning.  So I called then, but got her voicemail.  I left a message.  I then wondered if I'd been given the assignment, and if so, if I'd have to go in that afternoon.  Finally, I tried calling her again about 12:30.  I got Lisa in person, but she said she was in a conference call and would call me back in half an hour.  So I waited an hour, but no response.  I tried calling one more time, but got voicemail again.  I just decided to wait it out, hoping for a call back.  But there were no calls.  So I made a mental note to call again this morning.  I was hoping to get her on the phone and find out what's what on the assignment.  So this morning, I called again.  And once again, voicemail.  I do hope to speak to Lisa, and find out what's going on.  She owes me an apology!

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope you all had fun seeing 2012 out and 2013 in.  Last night, I was out with my pal Brian (:iconatomic-bear:).  He had some friends with him from the Cartoon Art Museum bookstore, Nick and Destiny (:iconinuyashassexywife:).  Destiny was this cute otaku girl with a punk raver look.  So first we had dinner at Tokyo Express on Market St.  I had beef teriyaki, served donburi style.  After we ate there, we went through Chinatown to North Beach.  We'd originally planned to go to this gelato shop called Naia, but when we finally got there, it was closing.  We were still allowed in, but many of the flavors were out.  I'd have been happy to stay, as I saw a few flavors I might have liked.  They had some interesting flavors, like gingerbread, bosc pear and "21st Amendment Beer."  But Brian decided we should move on, as all the flavors he liked were gone.  So we went across the street to an Italian pastry shop called Mara's.  I saw they had tiramisu on their dessert menu, so I had to have some of that!  Got it with some tea.  We hung out, did some sketching.  Later, we had to take Destiny to catch a bus back to Treasure Island.  And some time after that, Brian and Nick headed off, before midnight.  So I went to the Embarcadero to catch the fireworks at midnight.  Things were crowded there, but I had a good time.

Merry Christmas, dear watchers!  Hope you all had a nice Yuletide today.  Mine was pretty good.  It rained quite a bit today, though.  Anyway, we started the day with a special French toast breakfast.  I got to talk to my sister Suzy on the phone.  Then we opened presents.  I got a sweater, a pair of pajamas, a check and a calendar.  After that, I relaxed and worked on art.  In the afternoon, we had Christmas dinner: turkey breast, sweet potatoes and broccoli.  Not a big fancy dinner, just the three of us.  For dessert, we had ice cream and chocolate chip cookies.  After that, we watched the movie RED.  I like that movie, and Dad does too!  Anyway, things were all right today, had a good time.

Hey folks!  I'm writing this from my parents' house.  Here to celebrate Christmas.  My dad came and picked me up this evening.  Y'see, I had originally thought about going to the house on Friday.  But then Mom called and said Dad wanted to have dinner at his club tonight.  They always have a great buffet on Sundays.  So the plan was we'd have dinner there tonight, then they'd bring me to the house afterwards.  But the Mom wasn't feeling well, and it's been raining on and off in San Francisco.  So the plan changed.  Dad picked me up and we stopped at a nice place in Millbrae called Peter's Cafe.  He's eaten lunch there a number of times.  They had a prime rib dinner special, and I had to have that. (I would have had prime rib if we'd gone to the club tonight.) So now, here I am, and ready for Christmas! :)

There's been a snag in my plans to make custom holiday cards this year.  This morning, I was installing new ink cartridges into my color printer, so I could start printing my cards.  But then the problems arose: the display screen on the printer said the printer cartridge access door was open, even though it wasn't. :crash: What's more, there was a kind of switch I played around with, and that changed the message to say that one of the cartridges wasn't intended for my particular make of printer.  What?! :frustrated: I tried turning the machine off and on again, but that didn't help.  Then I tried unplugging it, and plugging it back in.  That didn't work either.  So then I decided to call Hewlett-Packard's tech support.  I found a number online, and discussed the problem with the operator.  We did a remote session where he checked out my computer.  It seemed to him my iMac wasn't running right.  He offered to fix my iMac, with a year's service, for just under $200!  Of course, I didn't feel like spending that kind of money.  The tech guy then offered me a one-time repair for over $100.  So I said no thanks, and ended the call.  Anyway, I went to the HP website for a troubleshooter's guide. (Shoulda done that in the first place!) I researched this particular problem, tried the steps they'd suggested (most of which I'd already tried), then learned that something is probably broken with the printer.
Anyway, so it looks like I won't be printing my own cards this year.  Too bad, because I do like doing that.  I still want to send cards, so I'll be mailing to those of you who sent your addresses, just not ones made by me.  I'll be sending E-mail greetings also, and it'll have the image I intended for my card this year.

Today there was another event at the Cartoon Art Museum.  This one was in connection with the upcoming movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  When I'd heard about this one, I had hoped I could go and draw at it.  I do love drawing fantasy creatures! ;) Anyway, I got an E-mail not long ago from Andrew, the gallery manager, saying I had been signed up already.  Anyway, there were shifts at 11 AM to 1 PM, 1 to 3 and 3 to 5.  I responded, saying to pencil me in for a 1 o'clock spot.  So I went down today and got to draw.  I think they were expecting more artists, but all in all, not many others had come.  I was prepared to give up my seat at 3, but fortunately, I was allowed to stay.  Anyway, the gist was, people could come in and get free sketches.  With a donation to the Museum, they'd get their sketch on good quality paper.  Plus, there was free merchandise: T-shirts, mugs, wrapping paper, activity books, even felt wizard hats.  And they even had free passes to an advance screening on Monday.  I managed to turn out some nice sketches.  Mostly depcitions of Bilbo Baggins.  One strange experience was this fellow who came by a few times.  He tried to ask me about the merchandise, as I was sitting next to it at the time.  Thing was, he didn't speak, as he was either deaf or just didn't speak English.  He was trying to ask how much the items cost, and we had to explain that they were all free.  Anyway, we didn't have much of a turnout.  Probably because so many people must have been out Christmas shopping.  But we still managed to rake in more than $50 in donations!  At the end of the day, I'd had a good time.  Got a nice load of free stuff, plus I've been put on the guest list at the advance screening on Monday! :D

Well, faithful watchers, my temp assignment in Belmont is finally finished.  Here's the story...Yesterday morning, I called Lisa at my agency if the assignment at Moquin Press was still going on.  She said she'd contact them and get back to me.  I hoped I wouldn't have to go back, but I accepted that I might.  Lisa finally called me  back about 1:20 PM to see if I was available.  I was out of my place when she called on my cell phone.  At least I was on my way home.  So I rushed to pack my stuff, and hightailed it out to get a bus to the train station.  I didn't think I'd make it in time to catch the 2:07 train and make it there by 3 o'clock.  But sure enough, I did, just in time!  So I went down to Belmont and got to work.  I was using my Clipper Card, which you load money onto, and can use on public transport in the Bay Area.  I had to reload it because to tag in at a CalTrain station, you need a minimum of $1.25 on the card, and I had a deficit of at least two bucks. (Until recently, I didn't know you could have a negative balance on it!) I had tried to load the card at the station in San Fran, but it wasn't accepting cash, and I had to catch the train before it left.  I would have loaded it at the Belmont station, but there was no machine for that.  So I asked one of my fellow temps if he knew of a place nearby where I could load the card.  He said I could do it at Safeway, which I knew was a couple blocks away.  So on my first break of the evening, I hoofed it over.  But I was told they didn't reload Clipper Cards at Safeway!  Fortunately, there was a Walgreens not far away, and I got it done there.  I had no idea this would take so long!  We're supposed to have ten minutes for a break, and this took about half an hour!  So yeah, I was kind of put through the ringer yesterday.  Then this morning, Lisa called me to say the assignment was up.  When I had left the night before, I knew there were boxes of mailers left to assemble, and some of the people there said the assignment would probably last another day or two.  I can't help but wonder if I was just taken off the assignment because of that extra-long break I would up taking.  But at least I won't have to go back to Belmont now.

Hey gang!  Much as I'd have liked to stay at the folks' house over the weekend, I'm back in the city.  I already did have the last weekend there anyway.  But I wanted to be here for an event: the Holiday Sketch-a-Thon at the Cartoon Art Museum!  This had a bunch of us local cartoonists drawing sketches for free, or for donations to the museum.  I was there today, drawing sketches for people who came in.  We had visitors from around the world: places like the Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia and Australia.  I had some fun requests: I think my favorite thing to draw was a sasquatch.  Some of the other guys got a few requests I wish I had gotten: like one lady asked another artist for a picture of her riding a dinosaur, and a couple asked yet another for a pic of them fighting zombies.
I happened to sit next to someone who turned out to be something of a big deal: an artist named Gene Hamm.  He's a veteran animator who's worked on Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings and also on shows for Hanna-Barbera like Fangface and The Smurfs.  He had a few interesting stories to tell: like how he once met Tex Avery, who made a drawing for him showing the difference between the Disney style and Tex's style.  Anyway, Gene drew caricatures of quite a few people.  He also sold a DVD he made that teaches you the basics of cartooning.  He showed me an animated short he made called "The Conceited Little Christmas tree" (you can see it here: [link] ) It was some honor being in his presence! :D
Anyway, it was a good event.  We'd raised more than $50 in donations.  After the event, a bunch of us went to the Grove for our InkDrinkDraw. (Gene didn't go with us, unfortunately).

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Hope everyone had a nice time with your families.  My Thanksgiving was pretty good.  This morning, I went to the San Francisco International Auto Show with my dad and Brian.  Saw a lot of the new car models.  But the highlight for me was a collection of vintage cars from the Academy of Art University.  My favorite was a 1962 Rolls Royce with trim that looked like weaving from a cane chair.  There was also a cool bunch of customized cars in the "Aftermarket Alley."  Later on, we had our thanksgiving dinner; turkey breasts, mashed potatoes, stuffing, baby carrots, cranberry sauce and biscuits.  For dessert, my sister baked a large Dutch apple pie.  We also had a raspberry cheesecake.  So it was nice being with the folks, especially my little nephews.  As for my assignment at Moquin Press, we were hoping to finish that up yesterday, but there were still boxes of stuff to assemble.  They're having some people in tomorrow and Saturday to work on what's left, but it's just the morning shift.  I'm not sure if they'll be finished before Monday.  I'll call my recruiter at the agency and see what's what.  Anyway, I'll be back home tomorrow, and can catch up on some coloring.
Oh, one more thing.  I should say what I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving.  I am thankful that my life is better now than it was this time last year.  And also, I am thankful for what I have, as in people who believe in me, and a roof over my head, when there are others who aren't so lucky.

Well, gang, you could say I started my Thanksgiving visit to my folks early this year.  I'm writing from my folks' house.  I decided to take the assignment in Belmont after all.  Wednesday I started.  It was at a shop called Moquin Press.  They had us putting together promotional materials to be sent through the mail.
My dad picked me up yesterday, and I'm staying at the house for now.  On Wednesday, though, I was taking public transport to Belmont.  I could easily reach the place by CalTrain.  But traveling there and back would be expensive!  A round trip to Millbrae on BART was costing me over $8 each day.  But the round trip to Belmont includes a bus ride, making the round trip $13.50 each day!  So I'm glad staying here defrays the costs.  And Suzy and her family are coming to the house tomorrow, so I'll gte to see my nephews. :)

Hey, gang.  Well, I got a call from my recruiter Lisa today.  The assignment in Burlingame is on hold, I think.  She told me they wouldn't need us this week, or next week.  It's not over as far as I know.  But she said she'd keep an eye out for more assignments for me.  Then Lisa called back with news of another assignment.  This one's in Belmont.  I looked up the address, and found it's even further than Burlingame!  I can reach it by CalTrain.  But the hours are the same, 3 to 11 PM.  So I declined it.  Later, Lisa called me again.  She said she was in a bind, and really needed a few more people for the Belmont assignment.  She offered me a rate of $10.50/hour if I agreed to do it. (I hadn't asked what it had paid before, but I have a feeling it would have been $9/hour again.) And she said the assignment would only last until next Wednesday.  So I agreed that I'd call her tomorrow morning with my decision.  This evening, I called my mom and told her about the situation.  Since my folks live close to Belmont, she said I could stay there a while.  So that could save me the expense of travel.  Anyway, I'll call Lisa tomorrow, and if she hasn't found enough people by then, I'll accept the assignment.  So let's see what happens.

Anyway, it's about time for me to make up my Holiday Card list.  If you'd like a handmade card from me this year, please send me your mailing address in a note.  If you'd sent me your address in the past, you might want to send it again, as I lost a bit of info when my old Mac died.  And please respond as soon as possible (especially if you live outside the U.S.)!  Thanks! :D

This week at work wasn't too bad.  However, the beginning and ending weren't so smooth.  On Monday night, I got on the train to go home.  Just as it was about to leave, this disheveled woman got on and sat adjacent to me.  She was rambling, saying she needed to go to the hospital, she needed to call her lawyer, etc.  I kept trying to tell her to calm down, that everything was going to be all right.  She wanted to get off the train at my stop.  She said something about calling 911, and I called for her.  Then BART Police contacted me to get the story, and I described the woman.  I just stayed with her until the cops arrived.  She didn't want to talk to them.  When it was clear I didn't know this woman, the police said I was free to go.  So I made haste homeward!
Then on Friday, there had been whispers that the people at the shop would be asking some temps to come in the next day.  I hadn't been personally asked to, but I worried a bit that I would.  At the end of the day, I had my time card signed, and I was ready to go home.  I was saying my goodbyes and "see-you-Mondays," when one fellow temo, Liz, said, "Aren't you coming in tomorrow?"  The thing was, anyone coming in would have to come in the morning.  Mike, the supervisor, said no one would be staying past three.  So I asked Liz if I should go in the next morning.  She didn't say, "You don't have to," she said, "I would."  So I felt compelled to return in the morning.
So this morning, I got up early.  I'd set my alarm for 5 AM.  I planned to get there around 8.  So I got myself ready and took the train down.  When i got into the shop, I was told I wasn't supposed to come in today.  So I started to head back.  I planned to stop at a coffeeshop for a little something before taking the train home.  But then one of the ladies there called me back.  So I returned.  I guess they figured since I went through the trouble and expense of getting there, they might as well let me work a bit.  So basically I was assembling cardboard boxes for four hours.  So I managed to get some overtime pay.  But had I known, I would have just stayed home!
