Had to have some dental work done recently.  Here's how it started: one night (a week ago from Wednesday), one of my teeth broke.  I think it cracked while I was eating popcorn.  Anyway, some time after that, a piece of my tooth just came off!  So, the next morning, I called Dr. Lee, my former boss.  I hoped he could look at my broken tooth.  Fortunately, he was able to see me early, before his first patient came in.  So I hightailed it to his office.  Dr. Lee took a look in my mouth, surveyed the damage, then X-rayed the teeth.  He'd noticed a hole in the tooth next to the one that had cracked.  He found cavities in that tooth.  Some food must have gotten stuck between those two teeth, and damaged them.  He proposed a crown on the tooth that broke, and a filling in the other one.  Now, my dad is a retired dentist, and Dr. Lee had taken over his practice.  Dr. Lee suggested that Dad could do the work on me if he were available.  If he couldn't do it, Dr. Lee would, but he'd have to charge me for it.  Frankly, I didn't care who was doing the work. (I was sure that if Dr. Lee charged me, my folks would help me pay the bill.) Anyway, we called my dad about the situation, and he agreed to work on my teeth.  We set up the appointment for the following Wednesday.  The wait wasn't a problem, as my tooth wasn't in pain, and it wasn't cutting up the inside of my mouth.  On that Wednesday, I went back to Dr. Lee's office, where Dad came and worked on my mouth.
Had to take a shot of Novocaine to numb the upper left side of my mouth.  Anyway, the operation went smoothly.  Fortunately, I didn't need a root canal.  The filling was done, and the base for the crown was put in.  The crown will be installed a week from Wednesday.  The reason it wasn't put in right away is because Dad likes to wait before putting in a crown, just to see if there are any problems that need to be treated in the meantime.  Which makes sense, because whatever problems there might be shouldn't be sealed in.  Anyway, I'm glad I had this problem seen to, before things got too bad!  In the future, I should try to floss more often!

That doesn´t sound great... But be glad you didn´t have to pay for the work!

Have you (as kid) ever thought about following your father´s footsteps and become a dentist yourself? A lot of children with parents from the medical field try to go into that field as well!

All the best,

Chris

When I was a kid, I remember I wanted to be a veterinary dentist.

Never know such a field of medcine even exists!

So why did you turn against the idea in the end?

Best wishes,

Chris

I figure it was logical for there be dentists for people's pets and such, considering there are doctors for animals. Anyway, after watching a lot of cartoons on TV, I changed my mind and wanted to be an animator. This eventually developed into a desire to be a comic artist.

I have 4 teeth cracked this winter. Then it wasn't enough. Suddenly another one started to hurt me. It looked all right. No hole or anything like that. The doctor had to open it and I ended up with clearing everything and at the end she sealed it. This treatment cost always a fortune.

I've had pretty good deals with my own teeth, and the last time I was in the dentist patient's chair, they said my brushing performance was very good. There was a slight case of gingivitis due to my lax flossing abilities, and some plaque buildup on the back molars, but now I do those too. Oh, and I've switched to a softer toothbrush now that I'm older. I think that saves me the trouble of wearing down my teeth, and it saves the dentist the trouble of dealing with my teeth. On top of that, I think I flossed some time ago. Sometimes I floss when I eat fruit or meat, or both, to get out those annoying bits. On another note, I haven't had a cavity since 2006. I've never had an abscess, which is a good thing too. I have a friend who had an abscess once, and he developed a fever as a result. His mother said wait it out, and he almost died from it. Oh, puh-leeze, Jim Henson did the exact same thing, and look what happened to him! Sorry to complain, but I've heard abscesses can be fatal. The bacteria from the toothache can spread to the heart and the brain, according to what I've heard.
